Microorganisms for Space Survival

As we journey into space, we may bring many other species with us - some of which may survive better that we can. Built space environments, including the International Space Station, are known to have a variety of bacteria and fungi which haven been identified. Many of these have high amounts of pigments, including melanins and carotenoids, which may help protect against certain factors such as radiation and chronic microgravity.
